Transferring to Another College
People transfer for various reasons – some with the intention to transfer, and sometimes the decision to transfer is made for you such as employment, family, etc.
Transferring schools can seem overwhelming and daunting. Whether you are earning a degree with MSUB or just taking MSUB credits to transfer elsewhere, we want to help you succeed in your process. This page will assist you in navigating the transferring process to best prepare you in your next educational institution.
Planning and Steps for Transferring
- Colleges have unique policies and transfer requirements. Therefore, review the schools’ policies regarding credits, GPA, application deadlines, and housing (not all schools provide housing for students).
NOTE:It is important to recognizethat not all credits will be transferred to the major program you are interested in at your target school. Please reach out to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿ÚÃâ·Ñ Office at your target school to see how your credits will transfer, specifically to your program, and you could also work with your current advisor.
- Please work with your current advisor and reach out to your target school to see how your credits will transfer for the program you are interested in. Our advisors do our best to assist students with this process, but it is ultimately on the student to do the research to ensure credits transfer. Do not assume all credits will transfer!
- Some schools won't accept credit from a class if you earned below a C (C-, D, D-, F).
- Transferring can impact the intended graduation date and program credit requirements.
- Focus on maintaining a strong academic record.
- Develop an Educational Plan: Create a plan that outlines your academic goals and how your coursework will align with your target school's requirements.
- Work with MSUB Career & Employment Services to explore and receive guidance and support while selecting an educational/career path that is right for you.
NOTE: Switching schools can potentially disrupt and/or delay your graduation.
Gather required materials.Ensure all information is accurate. Documents can take time and effort to not only gather, but to also complete. In some cases, specific majors may also have different deadlines or minimum academic requirements.

You will need to update your FAFSA with the new school's information and be aware you may receive a new financial aid package that could differ from your previous one.
- Communicate: It is important to keep your current school notified of your intention to transfer.
- Make sure to ask if your student account is fully settled or if you have any outstanding balances.
- To avoid having to start repaying any of your federal loans as you transfer, make sure you understand deferment.
