"I want to strengthen my Korean language skills. I will push myself to go out of my
comfort zone to meet new people and speak Korean with locals. Having the opportunity to immerse
myself in cultural diversity will help me understand the values of cultural differences and
how to show that to others when I return home"
Jorie Rodgers, Sophomore - English Education
2025-2026 UISFL Scholar for Hallym University, SOUTH KOREA
"I know that studying abroad and learning a language through immersion is an experience
that is irreplaceable and priceless. I am not sure what I want to pursue degree wise yet.
I know that no matter where I end up career wise, this opportunity would have an immensely positive
impact on whatever I end up pursuing whether that be cyber security, music, or maybe
even media translation if I can get a degree in linguistics!"
Briella Lewis, Sophomore - General Studies
2025-2026 UISFL Scholar for Nihon University, JAPAN
"The 鈥榩ipedream鈥 that I see for an opportunity to study abroad in Kumamoto is a chance
to begin translation of the Japanese language, if I could get my foot in the door of
translating Japanese books then the possibility of me translating authors of whom I look up to
dearly would become a seeable reality. I have a deep admiration for Japanese culture, and
with the opportunity to see the country at a near proximity would surely further cement my
academic interest (and possible career?) of and in Japan."
Joseph Evenson, Junior - English Education
2025-2026 UISFL Scholar for Prefectural University of Kumamoto, JAPAN
"Since an early age, I have always been very interested in Japanese history, language
and culture. I have studied the Japanese language and culture for six years. Studying
abroad in Japan will allow me to immerse and engage myself in the language and culture that
I have studied and dedicated myself to learn, 鈥楾o study abroad is to have one more window
to see the world more clearly.鈥 "
Jared Fuette, Senior - Liberal Studies
2025-2026 UISFL Scholar for Prefectural University of Kumamoto, JAPAN
"As a nineteen-year-old I haven鈥檛 really gotten to experience the world from my own
perspective. To experience the world, I鈥檝e been placed in firsthand, grants me the
ability to become more dependent upon myself. While I value independence being in a foreign country
will also allow me to reach out to others and learn to make connections with new people
in a
way previously unachievable."
Rynn Legler, Freshman - General Studies

"The JET program has been a goal of mine since before entering college and is one of
the main reasons I am pursuing a bachelor's degree. This study abroad program will
