Welcome!

Our comprehensive chemistry program is designed to allow flexibility to meet individual interests. A chemistry major can find employment in laboratories ranging from academic research, industrial research and development, or even quality control. Selection of elective courses in other fields such as biology, geology, business or health sciences can open up a variety of career options. The department offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry as well as a Chemistry Minor.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Recall and combine factual knowledge from across the five principal areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical, biochemistry and analytical) and be able to interpret and translate scientific data to solve chemical problems with industrial and academic applications.
  • Apply laboratory techniques (including modern instrumentation) and laboratory safety protocols to design and conduct experiments to test chemical hypothesis.
  • Demonstrate the ability to discuss (written and oral) scientific information with chemists and non-chemists.

Michael Cuddy on Yellowstone River with equipment

Cuddy doing some of his field work along the Yellowstone River near Big Timber (Jessica Plance / MSU Billings)

As the project鈥檚 principal investigator, Cuddy has designed and carried out the integrated assessment of nutrient chemistry and microbial biodiversity along the Yellowstone River...鈥淏ased on data so for, we do see some difference in nutrient content upstream from Billings and downstream from Billings.鈥
